Sky Lanterns known traditionally as Khoom Fay in
China were initially used as a military signals in the 3rd Century and
strategically launched during war.
They were later adopted and launched alongside fireworks at festivals by local
folk, carrying away their troubles as the lantern rose higher bringing
prosperity and good luck to the future. Lanterns were also given to Monks in
order to receive wisdom, as the flame of the Lantern would guide them to
knowledge and the right path.
Today in China these lanterns are still released in the hundreds of thousands at
Chinese New Year in hopes of good luck for the coming year.
